The WIF-KL 2013 is organised following the successes of Kuala Lumpur Innovation Forum (KLIF) that were held in the 2010 and 2011, and the rebranded World Innovation Forum Kuala Lumpur 2012.
In addition to the Forum, there are an Exposition and satellite events. These provide platforms for participants from the public, private, academia, civil society and global networks to discuss and share experiences on issues related to innovation, with particular reference to the theme of the forum - “The Future We Desire."
The theme underlines the reason for inclusive innovation towards improving the quality of life of people at all strata, by opening up sustainable livelihood and productive income-generating opportunities, especially for the poor.
One of the central challenges for many developing countries is to establish a scientific and progressive society that is innovative and forward-looking and one that is not only a consumer of technology but also a contributor to the scientific and technological civilisation of the future. Towards this end, many countries are now taking efforts to increase the capacity and capability for research, development and commercialisation, as well as promoting and inculcating a culture of innovation in their respective countries.
Through the WIF-KL 2013, we hope to build and strengthen networking, linkages and collaboration among us in order to nurture productive ways of thinking about innovation, developing a conducive ecosystem and understanding the workings of innovation within its complex systems. The recommendations at this forum will be of great value in our pursuit to harness the full potential of innovation. We should be ready to collaborate, on a level playing field, in a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy.
As recognition inspires people to strive for excellence, our programme includes WIF-KL 2013 Awards Night to be held tomorrow. Among the awards that will be given away on this special occasion are the National Innovation Awards, the National Young Scientist Award, the National Technologist Award and the Grassroots Innovators Awards.
I would like to thank the organising committee and the strategic partners for their relentless commitment and tireless effort in ensuring the success of WIF-KL 2013. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their generosity and without whose support this event would not have been possible.
